Daily Teabag Recap

Let me clarify--these aren't strictly made one at a time, one per day.

I'm apparently not hardwired for working on and completing one thing at a time.

I like to think of my modus operandi as controlled chaos, whereby suddenly--voila!--several finished pieces materialize from my marks.

 More fun that way.

And definitely not a linear thought process.

Noticing similar themes crop up in my work is somehow gratifying--this is one of the flowers I've made recently during my crafty/etsy phase.

If you've done a blog post on common themes in your own work or put photos online somewhere, please feel free to leave a link in the comments. I'm fascinated! Happy weekend!

Vines and Roses

The roses I neglect are the ones that do the best!
En mai fait ce qu'il te plaît--Do what you like in May. This feels very appropriate right now-- this spring has been so magnificent on our property, almost like living in a dream world (the Shire) or in Brittany.
An amazingly engineered nest in the vineyard
Climate seems to be everything to my husband and me, probably because we were born and raised in wonderful ones, California and Brittany, where everything grows and the humidity is low.

Shiraz grapes full of promise
There's nothing like having the windows open with a natural breeze in the house. Being able to work outside when you want.

The last of the azaleas
Gardening is fun, not torture, and we have at least another week of loveliness left before mercury and humidity skyrocket until mid August.

It's good weather for being productive.

Lovely Spring Feeling

Hope it's a beautiful spring (or autumn) day where you are! Around here, the beauty of spring is almost surreal. And must be treasured, in view of our superhot, humid, but at the same time drought-y summers...

Here's the beauteous fabric sent to me from South Africa by Robyn of ArtPropelled. I'm hoping to get time to make something from it soon. And I've just finished a sculpture series dating from almost a year back, which I'll show you in a coming post. In the meantime, I'm happy to have done more teabag drawings.

You might have noticed I haven't been the most regular poster on this blog of late. As every artist who tries to self promote their art knows, when you have your own business (and let's just say I have more than one to run) you're responsible for so many (too many!) details. And the devil is in the details. But I'm feeling on top of it all once again. The decision to let go of trying to be found on Etsy is contributing to my peace of mind.

Do you have any suggestions or experience concerning alternative online venues for selling your artwork?

General Update and New Collages

Just working on my teabags--these are drying. Some of those herb teas are quite colorful!

And eating lots of this wonderful fennel orange and olive salad for energy. I could eat
it every day--this is the second day in a row I've made it-- but I ran out of fennel.

I've been revisiting some earlier work and tweaking it to my new vision

These photos aren't the best, but they do give you an idea. Other than that, I have delivered quite a few crafty things, like granny chic appliqued pillows, hair flowers made from vintage notions, and corrugated gift card envelopes from my Etsy shop to a museum shop. I'll be listing more mixed media works and sculptures in my shop in the near future. I have a lot of amazing collections and want to open a vintage shop on Etsy, but am rethinking that due to discouragement from the difficulties of being found in Etsy's search.

Do you think that it's as hard to get views for a vintage shop as it is for an art shop? Any suggestions or any comments about this are very apropos, since I'm wondering more and more if Etsy isn't an impossible dream for some of us...

Thank you to everyone who reads this, comments, or follows--I'm so grateful for your loyalty. Blogging has been very good for teaching me to let go of ego and expectations. My last post got lots of comments, new people, and even a sweet email--just when I was feeling a little bit down. I might not have quite as many followers as my ego probably expected after two years of blogging, but those I have are awesome. xoxo to all!!

Teabagging à ma façon (my way)

I have jumped on the used teabag bandwagon!

I was highly resistant to this online trend. But then I cut out caffeine, alcohol, sugar, grains, dairy, and fruit...

Not only have I lost weight, gotten my creativity back, gotten less stressed out and more energetic (sound like an infomercial yet?)— but since I drink only herbal teas I have a TON of teabags. So one day, I gingerly opened one up and saw that the paper they use is very robust and will stand up to abuse. Since abuse is one of my secret tools in creating destroyed works, I thought “Why not? Nobody has to know.”

But I actually loved how much fun it was making marks on these sturdy little papers.

So now you know.

Antique Graffiti

Here in our Virginia hotbed of Revolutionary and Civil War vestiges we often read about new archaeological finds. One restoration that caught my eye in view of my fascination with graffiti turns out to be called "Graffiti House" near Culpeper Virginia.

Someone's home was used as a field hospital for the Confederacy, later becoming a headquarters for Federal forces. Soldiers from both sides wrote and drew on the walls, creating a collection of over 200 individual pieces that covers the upstairs rooms from floor to ceiling.

Restorers are attempting to remove the paint and whitewash that subsequent owners used to try to cover up the markings. They also need to stabilize fragile plaster on the walls to preserve the installation of caricatures, messages, autographs and inside jokes.

More antique graffiti: did you know that 18th and 19th century boors messed up the Temple of Dendur?  You can visit it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. photo via Thiago Santos
Gladiator graffiti from the Colosseum in Rome. Sorry about the photo quality, it was very difficult to capture these images due to the low light in this area. Taken by my husband, as I was most probably overwhelmed with the energy lingering within the Colosseum walls, where so many humans and exotic animals lost their lives, all in the name of entertainment. At least the masses were fed with the spoils--rhinoceros, elephant and giraffe steaks were the order of the day.

Dragon Energy

On January 23, 2012 the Year of the Water Dragon will begin.  A symbol of good fortune and a sign of intense power, in China the dragon is regarded as divine. It's the one animal in the Chinese Zodiac that exists only in mythology.

The color associated with the Year of the Dragon is golden and the energy sounds ferocious. This seems to me like it's going to be a creatively charged, high energy period. I read that it's lucky to eat Napa cabbage or similar greens. My decluttering will be finished too, so I can invite in the highest quality chi. I'm even toying with a major studio clear out. Instead of trying to organize my assemblage odds and ends so that I don't feel like a bag lady in there, I've decided that out they will go if they don't get incorporated into something by late spring. There!

And just so you don't think I'm too boringly virtuous, here's something delicious and decadent, so much butter and too much sugar, Cinnabon cinnamon rolls. Luckily my son is getting really good at whipping these up and eating most of them (the outer layer was eaten just as I was grabbing my camera).
