Silent movies have always inspired me with their compelling visual presence and strong graphics. "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" was an epiphany during my German Expressionist period back in college, right about the same time I discovered Egon Schiele. Now it's hard to imagine "discovering" Egon Schiele, that darling of Tumblr and Pinterest boards.

So every time I've DVRed a silent movie, I've felt somehow virtuous about using arcane knowledge acquired in college. I also confess to feeling somewhat smug about having a secret source of inspiration--it must be secret since I don't see lots of silent film stills being bandied about on the interwebs. Yet. But have you ever noticed that as soon as an idea penetrates your consciousness, everyone else simultaneously gets it too? It's that pesky universal consciousness again.
Circles have spoken and are still speaking to me right now as I try to revive my drawing practice.

In Zen Buddhist painting, ensō
symbolizes a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body/spirit
create. The brushed ink of the circle is usually done on silk or rice paper in one movement (Bankei,
however, occasionally used two strokes) and there is no possibility of
modification: it shows the expressive movement of the spirit at that
time. Zen Buddhists "believe that the character of the artist is fully
exposed in how she or he draws an ensō. Only a person who is mentally and spiritually complete can draw a true ensō. Some artists will practice drawing an ensō daily, as a kind of spiritual practice."[1] from wikipedia
The circle has been serving as a template for the daily watercolors I've been doing for the past few weeks. It cuts through any resistance that may arise as I decide what to draw or paint. It just is, so I don't hesitate and dive right in. It's a good exercise in restraint to let just enough white paper peek through in certain places.
What helps me stay on the creative track...

1- Exercise
A lot of my best ideas come in the last mile of a run. Endorphins put their spin on my thoughts, and even if they sometimes don't sound as exciting to me once the euphoria has worn off, I'm always thankful that I wrote them down while they were fresh.

2- Respecting the mind/body connection
Another sure fire method to stoke the creative fire is to practice meditation or yoga. The key to this is to be consistent, people!

3- Hanging out in the studio
This is as calming as meditation. It's productive too, because you often end up organizing and cleaning, which in turn frees you up for the next big project.

4- Travel, even if it's just to the closest big city or new neighborhood
New sights, sounds and smells, meeting new people, eating different food and seeing everyone else's creativity can jumpstart you out of your creative rut.

5- Creating and reinforcing new habits to best serve my current needs
I was having a hard time carving out a full hour in the mornings for writing and decided to write just a few minutes, with no pressure to reach a number goal, every morning before work. When I saw this 250 word challenge, I realized that I had been consistently hitting 250 and that it's a reasonable goal for me. Setting the bar low takes the pressure off, and I find myself wanting to write more.

What tricks have you found over time to help you in your creative practice?
“Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”
I have decided to live one of my dreams and finally create a real cutting garden for spring flowers. This local farm tells how they do it, but my little plants are quite a bit younger than theirs. I was hoping they wouldn't come up at all until spring. But our weather got really warm and the poor babies thought it was time to sprout. They're so cute and green and we're getting ready to put them to bed for overwintering tomorrow. Spring pics to come.

On a less literal level, what artsy seeds have you planted lately? Or maybe you're prepping the soil for a fertile future?deborah from collagewhirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18289060348720089728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5546021297231951752.post-76105229223875809622012-12-21T09:00:00.000-05:002012-12-21T13:17:10.772-05:00Happy Solstice in a Sacred Place<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Not sure if it's still available, but I'm doing this meditation series. It helps you adjust your expectations and understanding so abundance can come into your life. I've been working on this for several years on my own and it was really nice to have Deepak's take on it (as you see, we're on a first name basis). A little Deepak Chopra is never a bad thing!

This may have inspired me to do a new series based on colors associated with the chakras.
Do you get more inspired by the most recent things that find their way to you? Do pieces you've had for years become uninspiring, or maybe the longer you have them the harder it is to let go of them?

Organizing October is almost over, and I feel much better since the "purge". I was starting to question the wisdom of making assemblage art, with the huge selection of spare parts we artists insist on having around. It's always a conflict, because I'm a minimalist at heart, or I just want to be.

Sometimes it seems like organizing is its very own art form. In any case it's satisfying. Is that the Virgo in me?
I'm toying with the idea of signing up for NaNoWriMo. Have any of you done it before? You have to write a 50,000 word novel start to finish in the month of November. That would be great, but I have gotten about 20,000 words into my first novel --!!!--started in late summer and I'm afraid of diverting my word flow, haha. Sort of like how I decided not to worry about learning Spanish when I was in Costa Rica a long time ago because I hadn't yet acquired a solid base in French, which I was actively speaking at the time (still am). But it sure would come in handy to be fluent in Spanish, although now I'd prefer Italian and the Spanish would make that a cinch. All I'm trying to say is that there aren't enough hours in the day! So do I go for NNWM?
I've been working on finishing a few pieces for my upcoming show, "Nothing is Wasted" that opens at the beginning of October. This fiber collage feels like a departure from the two I made right before it. I dug deep to come up with lots of recycled materials. (here it is when I first started it) What do you think?

I have boards prepared for 3 more. I got the idea for this format because these are for 50 Small Works and they have to be under 12" x 12" x 4". I had gotten a little burned out on making extremely small pieces for miniature shows in the past three years, so 12 x 12 sounded good. And it made me think of something I might not have done normally.

I'm listening very hard these days for the voice, my authentic voice that
is. It wants me to make something by combining these two elements.

So even though I can imagine how I'll do it, I can't really picture exactly how it will turn out. But isn't that why we make art? For the surprise and satisfaction of creating something we never even imagined?

On a more down to earth note, I changed my blog's appearance a little--hope it makes for a more pleasant visit. And since I probably haven't lately, I want to thank everyone who reads this. I love your supportive and thought provoking comments!

This quote caught my attention--I think you need to know technique so you can forget about it. My temperamental sewing machine is actually giving me what I need these days. I'm wanting a tentative, random feel for the decorative stitching on these two pieces and my difficult machine is perfect for that. It is also managing the construction seams that need to be sturdy and provide strength.

Did I mention I feel like I can sew however I want now, since I've been sewing for many years? Kind of like drawing however I please, scribbling if I want (so there). I'm sure you agree.

Antique Graffiti

Here in our Virginia hotbed of Revolutionary and Civil War vestiges we
often read about new archaeological finds. One restoration that caught
my eye in view of my fascination with graffiti turns out to be called "Graffiti House" near Culpeper Virginia.
Someone's home was used as a field hospital for the Confederacy, later becoming a headquarters for
Federal forces. Soldiers from both sides wrote and drew
on the walls, creating a collection of
over 200 individual pieces that covers the upstairs rooms from floor to
ceiling.
Restorers are attempting to remove the paint and whitewash that
subsequent owners used to try to cover up the markings. They also need
to stabilize fragile plaster on the walls to preserve the installation

More antique graffiti: did you know that 18th and 19th century boors messed up the Temple of Dendur? Gladiator graffiti from the Colosseum
in Rome. Sorry about the photo quality, it was very difficult to
capture these images due to the low light in this area. Taken by my
husband, as I was most probably overwhelmed with the energy lingering
within the Colosseum walls, where so many humans and exotic animals lost
their lives, all in the name of entertainment. At least the masses were
fed with the spoils--rhinoceros, elephant and giraffe steaks were the
order of the day.

Well, not quite a daily collage--my second in three days--because the air conditioning in my studio has decided to not get any cooler than 94 degrees every afternoon. So, I'm working on something else in the coolness downstairs. I hope I'll let you know about my new project in the coming months.
So far, it's been a great Fourth of July, with an early morning swim, freshly picked blackberries for breakfast, and collage and mark making in the studio. I was inspired to make something with a vaguely patriotic flavor and here it is!
It was amazing to see the original manuscript of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein along with several of Shelley's manuscripts (complete with accomplished drawings), and to be able to picture the extraordinary lives led by this circle of young friends. We have the best plums, and this year we actually got to gather some by putting a mini electric fence around the tree to keep the squirrels and a crafty raccoon out. The fence will soon be moved to our pear tree as the fruit ripens.
Plum sorbet--all you do is cook the plums into a coulis (don't forget to strain it), and add cream. Freeze in a sorbet maker, or just stir every 45 minutes or so to break up the ice crystals. It's divine! Next time we'll use yogurt to make it a little healthier.
Shortly after joining Tumblr, I realized that an amazing, non mainstream artist I discovered a long time ago in college is not as secret now as it seemed to us back then. You may have guessed I'm talking about Egon Schiele, whose name, art and signature is now being used to hawk cosmetics.
The cosmetics company purports to take its 1910 Vienna seriously, even recreating make up from Schiele's works--for a trade show. The logo (Schiele's signature) is a nice touch too. Could these people actually create anything? I doubt Egon was worrying about makeup colors during his short, turbulent life that produced some of the greatest drawings in art history.
Schiele (1890-1918), who painted sensual beauties in WWI-era Austria. The quality of the Egon

Hope it's a beautiful spring (or autumn) day where you are! Around here, the beauty of spring is almost surreal. And must be treasured, in view of our superhot, humid, but at the same time drought-y summers...
Here's the beauteous fabric sent to me from South Africa by Robyn of ArtPropelled. I'm hoping to get time to make something from it soon. And I've just finished a sculpture series dating from almost a year back, which I'll show you in a coming post. In the meantime, I'm happy to have done more teabag drawings.
You might have noticed I haven't been the most regular poster
on this blog of late. As every artist who tries to self promote their art knows,
when you have your own business (and let's just say I have more than one to run) you're responsible for so many (too
many!) details. And the devil is in the details. But I'm feeling on top of it all once again. The decision to let go of trying to be found on Etsy is contributing to my peace of mind.

Do you have any suggestions or experience concerning alternative online venues for selling your artwork?

These photos aren't the best, but they do give you an idea. Other than that, I have delivered quite a few crafty things, like granny chic appliqued pillows, hair flowers made from vintage notions, and corrugated gift card envelopes from my Etsy shop to a museum shop. I'll be listing more mixed media works and sculptures in my shop in the near future. I have a lot of amazing collections and want to open a vintage shop on Etsy, but am rethinking that due to discouragement from the difficulties of being found in Etsy's search.

Do you think that it's as hard to get views for a vintage shop as it is for an art shop? Any suggestions or any comments about this are very apropos, since I'm wondering more and more if Etsy isn't an impossible dream for some of us...

Thank you to everyone who reads this, comments, or follows--I'm so grateful for your loyalty. Blogging has been very good for teaching me to let go of ego and expectations. My last post got lots of comments, new people, and even a sweet email--just when I was feeling a little bit down. I might not have quite as many followers as my ego probably expected after two years of blogging, but those I have are awesome. xoxo to all!!
